The oldest public museum in the world, founded in 1471 by Pope Sixtus IV, occupies the Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo Nuovo based on a design by Michelangelo and realized between the XVI and XVII centuries. After enhancements and restorations in the following centuries, these Capitoline Museums now host a spectacular collection of Roman statuary and an art gallery with works from the XV to XVIII centuries.
